  •  An old and very fine pair from Gbongan, in the Ife tribe territory

All the Ibeji from Gbongan are very particular and can be recognized very easily from the characteristic eyes shape, the hands, and the hairstyle with a small crest, common to all the Ibeji carved in this village, even if from different carvers. They are quite scarce to find and are very seldom offered by African Art dealers or at auction houses. The pair offered here, most likely from the early 1900, is a very nice example of this typology, with an antique natural patina and small remains of camwood. It is also enriched with two multicolored necklaces around the neck.

This pair is published in the Encyclopedia of the Ibeji on the photo n. 308
