Pair of Male & Female Porto Novo
Original text by Fausto Polo, 2013, translated to English from Italian
An ancient and rare pair male/female from Porto Novo, in the Anago tribe territory. Nowdays Porto Novo is the capital of Benin.
Ibeji from Porto Novo are particularly rare. It is extremely difficult to find a male/female pair from Porto Novo, and even more so to find a pair of this quality.
The carver of these ibeji was able to give them all of the identifying elements characteristic of those we have identified as originating in Porto Novo. These include the straight arms held away from the body, very particular hand and thumb designs, and characteristic feet with a very unusually thin base.
Both Ibeji have a rich natural patina, with typical traces of wear due to the tribal usage and natural aging of the wood.
Both wear necklaces of small blue beads and very old red and blue beads around the waist.Ibeji Art offers an unconditional guarantee of authenticity on the Ibeji sold because they are always accompanied by the Expertise of Fausto or Mauro Polo. READ MORE...
