An antique and rare Ibeji from Ikene, located in the Ijebu tribe territory.

Original text by Fausto Polo, 2017, translated to English from Italian
This statue illustrates the most prominent carving elements of this village, namely, the exaggerated size of the ears, which are both protruding and shaped like the wings of angels.
The Ibeji body is reddish in color, and is almost completely covered with camwood patina. The face has an old natural patina, with the somatic traits showing wear and patina from the continuous loving care and rubbing by the mother.
The hairstyle, consisting of seven braids rising from the forehead to the back, is colored with blue Reckitt's stain, brought to the region in the early 20th century.  Based upon the carving characteristics, this Ibeji could be attributed to an apprentice of the master carver Awolowo Adelaku, well known for his distinctive style and operating in Ikene during the first half of XXth century.
