SINGLE IBEJI FEMALE ILA ORANGUN | IBEJI ART

An ancient Ibeji from the village of Ila Orangun, Igbomina tribe. In his modern carving style and expressive strength the unknown author of this Ibeji must have been inspired by Ogunwuyi, the famous carver operating in Ila Orangun. It cannot be excluded that he had been apprentice in that great master’s workshop. The sculpture quality of this Ibeji is undoubtedly appreciable and his personalization level as well: the continuous row of triangles, each of which having the vertex in the direction of the base of the following triangle, can be observed not only on the side of the Ibeji base, but also, as form of scarification marks, on both arms, the chest, the shoulder, the back and on the upper part of the forehead, continuing all around the head. The statuette has the Islamic triangle (“tirah”) carved either on the chest and on the back. The high and artistic hairstyle shows traces of blue Reckitt paint and indigo powder. The Ibeji has a brown natural patina with an average coverage size of brown camwood patina.                                   Mauro Polo
