SINGLE IBEJI MALE AJASSE | IBEJI ART

An ancient and rare Ibeji from the village of Ajasse, Igbomina tribe. It is a typical Ibeji of this area, having the mouth rounded upwards and open, with a prominent row of upper teeth, lacking the central incisors. It is a statuette belonging to a rare typology, well carved and personalized as well. His face is an interesting sequence of volumes and spaces: the rounded forehead, the semicircular eyes bordered all around, the nose with a broad tip and, finally, the protruding mouth. The chest, the abdomen, the shoulders, the back and both arms are marked by parallel lines of scarifications, probably having a double meaning, decorative scares and sacrificial signs. The statuette has a smooth carved headdress called “dog’s ears”, with a pattern of parallel incisions, colored with blue Reckitt paint. The Ibeji’s body is brown in color, with evident traces of red camwood patina. The face has a natural old patina.                                             Mauro Polo
