Pair of Ajasse Females

$2,200.00Price
  • This rare and fascinating pair of old female figures originates from Ajasse, a village within the influential Igbomina Yoruba territory. The figures are defined by the unique stylistic trait of the Ajasse area: the mouth of each figure lacks the central incisor tooth on the upper jaw, likely referencing a local custom of dental modification or a specific clan identity. Adding to their distinction, the figures lack a traditional carved base and stand directly on their feet, which are sculpted wearing sandals—an uncommon detail suggesting the high status of the deceased twins. Years of continuous daily care and ritual anointing by the family have left the figures’ bodies covered in a heavy, deep encrustation of camwood patina. Furthermore, their hairstyles still bear the stain of indigo pigment, applied ritually to symbolically "cool" the spiritual head and ensure the deceased twins' serene repose. This pair provides a powerful glimpse into the sophisticated artistic and spiritual practices of the Igbomina people. Some losses due to the age on the faces of the Ibeji.

Provenance: From the Collection of Helen Cunningham and Ted Newbold, Philadelphia, PA.
