Pair of Erin Male and Female
Lovely pair of Ibeji carved in a Erin workshop. A standout feature is the lighter color of the faces caused by very frequent maternal washings. Stoll noted in his book (p. 218) that the Ibeji from the Oshogbo area, including Erin, are subjected to frequent washings with water - every four days - to maintain their purity and spiritual vitality. Pages 209 and 219 of Stoll's work illustrate comparable examples. Similar Ibeji examples are also illustrated in the photos 387, 389, and 395 of the Encyclopedia of the Ibeji by Fausto Polo. The two Ibeji wear charming multicolor beaded vests, most likely added later on.
Provenance: Private American collection
